What a lovely day today was at the delightful Abbotsford Convent, above is Clare Whitney's beautiful work and she really is a lovely lady to boot so if you have some time check her out! There truly was some amazing stuff on offer today and some amazing artisans producing that amazing stuff. Below is my stall , the coffee cup courtesy of the beautiful Cameron, at the St Heliers Street Store and Gallery cafe which is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend cuppa and read whilst your out and about. INTERVIEW: SHERIDAN JONES

So here’s the thing, I’m super fussy about stretcher arms, plinths and framing. Really, seriously. I take all my work to be framed at one particular place and after some time doing so I got to know one of the framers there – Sheridan Jones. She’s brilliant. She’s also a print maker, possibly the most fastidious of all art forms, which makes total sense vis a vis attention to detail and careful, professional presentation. I got to see her work in the flesh a few months ago at the Castlemaine Contemporary Art Space and loved by her paper sculptural forms. Animals made of paper that had been etched and coloured, and created this dynamic sense of transition from page to object. Like creatures stepping out of a book. Or better still, a subtle play on the idea of camouflage and pattern in feathers and fur, where forms and colours and lines are inscribed into the material body and yet also, are the material body.

I chatted to Sheridan about her work over the last couple of weeks.

Kent:

You recently exhibited a body of work at the Castlemaine Contemporary Art Space where you had these fabulous paper taxidermy animals. What inspired you to take the traditional 2D focus of printed paper into a 3D format?

Sheridan:

My true loves in art have always been sculpture and print, so after years of working with these themes (natural history, archeology, anthropology la la la) as etchings I decided it was time to develop a way to turn the prints into the full bodied creatures (in this case) that they were created to depict, so it’s all about mixing my loves and enjoying the processes doubly.

That makes me think about how archeology and natural history and all that sort of stuff is really about the marks of time. About the archive of past events. I could see how that would have a resonance with print making and how the marks that you end up with on paper are records from past activities.

How closely do you study the animals you use? Do you like to get things like feather patterns correct or is there a leeway for artistic intuition and freedom? Also, is the anatomy important because it must be pretty hard to fold the paper into the right bodily shapes?

i love that “the archive of past events”! yeah for me it’s the marks that time leaves behind that i love (from rust to coffee rings).
As far as using animals in my work? i really love anatomy and i’m not satisfied unless i feel like i’ve put forward the amazing intricacies of a creature’s features and patterns, be it on a feather or a shell. i want others to see what i love about that creature. the metallic breast feathers on a hummingbird are amazing! but, here is the but, i don’t always play it true to colour, most of the time but not always especially with the butterflies.
as far as the paper allows i do like to keep them as accurate as i can without too many folds and overlays to distract from the finished product.

Yes – that metallic shimmer on hummingbirds is just brilliant. Nature conjures up the most incredible beauty sometimes, it’s mesmerising. It’s interesting when you think about how birds and other animals, including insects, they all see differently to us. We see those colours and those patterns, but to a, say a budgie, they see other things because they see more – a budgie sees ultravoilet patterns that we, without technology, have no idea are even there!

So, you grew up in Castlemaine right? How do you think your time as a developing human being was impacted by your location? You live in Melbourne now, do you feel a difference in your creative energies between the two regions?

i actually grew up in the middle of nowhere (no wonder i’m such an anti social creature at times!) and moved to castlemaine when my boy was a babe, but i do believe that your surrounds impact on you greatly. it was when my son was little and i had taken him out of school to travel australia that i really started getting stuck into all my creative impulses again. everyday my bedroom opened onto a new and delicious view of nature, without the distractions of the mundane everyday stuff i re-engaged with my creativity. now here i am in melbourne and i must say that i love what i do so the main difference between castlemaine and melbourne is that many more doors have opened up down here, the busier i am the more of a roll i get on and new ideas and inspiration flow much quicker, it’s just a shame i don’t have the time to follow them all.

Yeah perhaps that’s a factor – the city has so much going on, and so much hectic energy to stimulate you but you’re left with such little time or space to actually produce. And the country is more relaxed with time and space to work but that reduced pace and activity can maybe limit the rapid stimulation of ideas.

I’m feeling lucky because having recently moved to the region everything seems exciting and fresh and engaging. With technological advances in very recent times I’m way more closely hooked in to the hive of activity in the rest of world than people living even inside of cities were as little as 10 years ago.

So what are you working on now? What’s stimulating your creative juices at the moment?

well i’m getting ready to go big scale with the printed animals, i really want to create a hunters den/mad scientist/quirky botanist laboratory style installation. mounted heads and hide rugs with a few odd bits in glass jars thrown in here and there. besides that i’m working on some artful practical objects that i hope to be able to source stockists for. as you know i want to do my masters next year and it would be great if i could work from home during that time.

That sounds brilliant. It makes me think of how nature is really only a label we apply to the ‘real’ world. We try and separate it off and categorise it and treat it like it is something different from us, in glass vials, in national parks. If you have a lab set up where all the ‘nature’ in it is actually made, all paper models printed and drawn and etched, that’s like a strong comment on that whole idea. I would love to see that.

exactly, it would seem that you have the words that i do not. it’s partly why i find the whole enlightenment period so hilarious and intriguing, it really exemplifies how big a human’s ego is and therefore how separately we set ourselves from nature. that could open up a whole new kettle of thought/fish.

Here are just a few of the new prints that I have been playing with. Over the course of the day at The Wonderful Printed Things Fair I had endless enjoyment watching people create their own creatures from these prints. Many had a story to go along with why they had combined the chosen head with the hat they had used or the jewels and the look on their faces whilst playing was priceless, adults seemed transported back to the days of paper dolls and children's look of serious concentration was magnificent!

What has started out as a project that I could have a bit of fun with has inspired me to extend the work into larger more detailed creations. Silly, silly fun.

I only wish I had gotten around to taking more photo's for all of you who missed the day, it was such a lovely atmosphere and I can truly say the other stall holders were delightful! I do love the St Heliers Street Store and Cafe, its honey wood furniture, beautifully time worn and polished floor boards and clean white walls inside that beautiful old building make it a most lovely space for a lazy sunday cuppa and a browse!

I can picture it now, a beautifully sunny spring day, a picnic hamper in one hand and some great printed bargains in the other. What a lovely way to enjoy the delightful grounds of the Abbottsford Convent. Methodist Ladies College are the wonderful hosts of this fantastic event which kicks off the season of print. Yes IMPACT is on it's way!

If only I could transcribe word for word the brilliant opening talk from the incredibly talented Jazmina Cininas, it truely made me fall in love with print all over again.

There were some really lovely works in the Agendo emerging artist award this year. Being a biannual prize I am very pleased to have stumbled onto it, got an application in on time and subsequently been a part of it. You see by the next time it comes around I wont be considered young anymore!

Anyway congratulations to Ash Kerr on his great and award winning entry 'Territory'. Also if you happen to be in vicinity of the Abbottsford Convent you really ought to pop in and visit the St Heliers Street Gallery and Store, oh and c3 Contemporary Artspace and Mercator Studios with their upcoming Craft Cubed conjunction with Craft Victoria, or just have a lovely spring time (at least it almost feels like spring) picnic in the glorious grounds of, you said it, Abbottsford convent.

Thanks to all you lovely people who popped in to visit 'Above the Mantle' and better yet, for purely selfish reasons, thanks to those of you who popped by to say hi!

I still get asked (by a certain person in particular) when and if I will move back to Castlemaine, I never feel like I have a reasonable answer! I love CASTLEMAINE wholeheartedly, I do, I guess I just like to explore new places a wee bit more for the moment!

Whatever the reason I would recommend a visit to this wonderful place to anybody just so long as you visit CASPA and LOT 19 amongst other things!

From all reports it is going to be an all round amazing show featuring a range talents from all round the place. NEW VINTAGE is a store freshly opened in Byron Bay (Shop 3B Byron Arcade, Lawson St Byron Bay) by two very talented ladies. Victoria Spring and Nicky McLaughlin have created a store that celebrates local artisans, artisans who use both new and vintage materials in a style that harps back to an elegant and luscious era.

Please have a peruse of their website by clicking on their name above, the items they have in store are beautifully crafted from heartfelt concepts and from what I have seen it shows!

Oh and amongst all of this lovely stuff you will also find some incredible embroideries by Miss Carla Dawes, some of my little creatures and some extraordinarily beautiful jewellery by shop owner Victoria Spring.

What I will say is that there has been a disastrous printing error on all the invites and THE SHOW ACTUALLY OPENS ON THURSDAY THE 7TH OF JULY same time (6-8pm), same place.
I would be hugely disappointed for your loss if you missed the opening and the chance to see this beautiful work all because of a printing error.

CASPA (home of the Castlemaine fringe) is a beautiful little artist run space in the heart of Castlemaine that has been the hub of the artistic community since it's beginnings many years ago. These two incredibly lush watercolours by the watercolour queen, Miss Bonnie Hanlon! I must say in real life these paintings really give you the feeling that they are floating in space, in my lounge, in my space.

I love these paintings, they are currently taking pride of place in my living room.

All of these images are of framed prints but I think the glass glare is minimal, hooray maybe I'm finally getting the hang of this photography bisso! Although it would be far smarter to photograph them before they are framed or scan them, well when I get to that stage I really will know I'm getting the hang of this documentation stuff. However back to these particular photo's, my work is made up of a million finely etched lines and photographing it whilst framed does seem to omit a bit of the detail.

To anyone out there who loves creatures and natural history as much as I do, and who also lives in Melbourne I really recommend visiting the Melbourne museum. Their insect collection is stunningly presented although not as much fun as it was back in the old day's, back when you could open draw upon draw of butterflies and beetles, all housed in the lusciously wooden and ancient looking plan draws.

I once got lost there on a school excursion so absorbed in perusing the cabinets that the rest of the class walked on without me. The teacher found me much later!

Oh and by the way the next show will be at CASPA in July, Castlemaine contemporary art space. It's an artist run space that hosts a huge array of great things from exhibitions to performances the list goes on. Click on the name and check it out, I'm looking forward to having a show in what was for so many years, my home town.

I'll provide some more info on this very soon.

The incredible Carla Dawes strikes again! As I was stuck in little ol Melbourne (and therefore could not be there to help Carla set up let alone see this collaboration in person) I was told not to get too excited about the photo's of our combined efforts, I was told they didn't do the work the justice it deserved, I was also told you couldn't see so clearly the three dimensional quality of the piece. So what do you think? I love the photo's! As far as I'm concerned this is how I always pictured the finished product to look, even when we were discussing our ideas and thoughts over a multitude of gin and tonic's!

I do hope you take the time click on each of these images, if you do you will see the work in a larger format so you can ponder over the amazing stitching Carla does. Such beautiful detail in thread, she draws such clear magnificent lines all with a needle and some cotton.

I guess you can tell I'm a bit of a fan!

Anyway I just want to say thank you Carla for all your effort, thank you for the installation, thank you for your fantastic work and thank you for you!

This little one is one of the first finished hummingbirds so far! So over the weekend I will be playing around to refine her some more and to give her a little more hummingbird metallic magic in the feather department. She does look a wee bit different now (compared to the last post where she was a vague looking pattern in plain paper), especially now that she's not covered in tape, I guess the etched lines add a little definition too. When I get some good light I'll take some more photo's from different angles (She is a great action model!). Oh and if your wondering the string on her foot leads to a tag stating that she is a 'selasphorus rufous', scientific name for a white bellied, metallic orange (brassy) throated hummingbird.

Such a talented woman, you just have to see it to believe it, so come along on the 6th of July (6-8pm) and if you haven't met her yet introduce yourself! Such an easy place to access, the Nicholas building is right in the centre of town a short stroll from Flinders st station, so really there are NO excuses, see you there!
I have my own little collection of beautiful Bonnie Hanlon originals on my walls, such a pleasure to run my eye's over each day and I know this show is going to be just as brilliant, who knows you may end up with your own Hanlon treasure to gaze upon!

First I play (sometimes for far too long) around to create the pattern, by the time I have figured this bit out my work space is covered in tiny bits of paper, not to mention screwed up and disregarded models. From here I unfold them and transfer the outlines onto my prepared copper plate. While watching the latest movie that's taken my interest I then draw all the detail onto the plate before popping it in the acid bath. Once I have printed these sections onto some really yummy 300 gsm paper I can then watch another movie while I cut them out, using a beautiful archival Japanese glue I then get to stick it all together and hope like hell it looks just like the one in my head does! I am hoping to be able to show you this little one finished very soon.

These are two recent commissions to come from the success of my current exhibition MENAGERIE.

Both so happen to be birthday presents but I must say one is an eightieth birthday present! Best wishes for a grand birthday there lovely lady.

I do feel quite humbled for such a special birthday to receive one of my works.

After days of printing, drying, hand colouring and cutting there are now 100 individually coloured and patterned butterflies filling my dining room table.

It's true, this is not a photo of 100 butterflies, but to be honest it wasn't quite as impressive as I had imagined it would be! They certainly do fill the table space much more than in this picture however.

As for the beautiful embroideries, I must say Carla Dawes has done it again with her oh so glamorous burlesque girls (I have had the fortune to sneak a peek at most of them so far and can say to you, it's very exciting! I can't wait to see the rest).

Once more stay tuned as the next pic's really ought to be the final product...

The opening night of Menagerie, art, people and booze!

The show continues on until the 28th of May and is open from Tuesday through to Saturday 12-5pm.

Hand held holdings is the store component of this beautiful little gallery and has a multitude of amazing little things to look at (and to take home), so go have a squiz, I think you may be pleasantly surprised!

A most heartfelt and welcoming invite from me to you all to the opening of MENAGERIE. An exhibition that feels as though it has been in the making for many years, from the time I was a small child I have been fascinated with natural history and I must confess David Attenborough has always been one of my all time hero's. As a bit of a mush however I never understood how he could stand there and watch as one creature killed and ate another.

My little babies I can promise have never hurt any others, have had no impact on environment or ecology, hatching and growing from a 100% cotton Hahnemuhle paper source they don't seem so fiesty but have a close look and I do believe you may see a glint in the eye of that old instinct here or there...

Opening night art browsing and drinks begins at 6pm on thursday May the 5th, pop in for a look, for a chat or for a shmooze with some of my most beautiful friends who are, as you may already know, amazing artists in their own right. Handheld Gallery

For those of you that missed the 'soft steel, hard dirt' show here is a small snippet of what you missed. Both Jakob and my works were editioned, generally in editions of either 5 or 10 for the smaller ones. I will soon be posting images of the entire show so you can have or relive the gallery experience from your lounge chairs! If anyone is interested in any of the work it will be posted with a little note that states how many are left in the edition and you can feel most welcome (invited even) to send me an email with any questions you may have whatsoever.

A new project entitled Freak Of Nature is a group exhibition curated by the divine Rona Green in which Paul is a part. This international folio show is to be exhibited first of all at the Switchback Gallery, Monash university, Gippsland before heading over the seas to the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA.

As Paul's editioning printer I have the delightful task of printing 50 of these most beautiful images, the line work is so wonderfully detailed, the night sky a good solid black and the stars such a clear bright complement to the dogs lovely face. It seems to be a natural progression for the pen and ink king.

Keep in touch as I will provide details such as dates etc... for this exhibition soon, and when allowed (can't spoil the surprise too much) maybe even the whole image of this sweet beasty!

I look forward to seeing the finished piece, a dozen'ish of the most beautifully skilled embroideries by Carla Dawes and a hundred butterflies by me!
Lot's of work yet to be done on these bugs, lot's of colouring, lot's of cutting, lot's of folding but stay tuned because in my mind's eye this work is going to come together brilliantly.

Menagerie is a series of etchings relating to what we might find delicately preserved inside the glass cabinets of the museum, two and three dimensional paper pieces that have the volume and substance of the creatures they depict.
A glimmer of my own personal joy with those things that represent the past, present and future in our history and environment.
Menagerie opens on the 5th of May at 6pm throught till 8 at the beautiful little gallery named Handheld, Handheld is located in the Paramount Arcade 108 Bourke Street Melbourne.

During the Castlemaine State festival it has been home to 'Cause and Effect' an exhibition who's theme centres on the decisions we make and where they lead us.

National Print Awards @ Tweed River Regional Gallery

The national print prize is held at the Tweed River regional art gallery each year and is organised by the Community Printmakers of Murwillumbah in northern NSW. The area has a strong print community and incredible artists, what else could you (could I) ask for?
Please excuse the quality of this photo, being made up of multiple layers it was a little tricky to photograph unframed, as you can see, a little tricky to photograph framed too!
Exhibition on show from the 1st of April through to the 29th of May.

Such an amazing array of print in all it's shapes and forms, the prize is currently being exhibited at Montsalvat, 7 Hillcrest Avenue Eltham and runs until the 22nd of May. There truly is nothing disappointing about this show, the initial judges chose well!

'Millers Road' 1/5 linocut, Jakob Schmitt 2011

Currently showing at c3 is Soft Steel Hard Dirt, an exhibition by Jakob Schmitt and Sheridan Jones.

Soft Steel Hard Dirt is a show by two printmakers working respectively with linocuts and etchings, their work contrasts the hard cold steel of industry with the soft earth of the natural world, each containing glimmers of the other whilst expressing the dominant force in the interaction of these two worlds.
Show runs from the 30th of March-17th of April.
